FLAGS PROJECT

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

With these series of flags I am working w/ Peruvian mineral paints I brought home from the Pisac market in the Sacred Valley. The paper is 140lb watercolor paper from a roll and sheets of Canson printing paper.  I brush the blank paper w/ h2o then sprinkle on the mineral powder and use a squirt bottle to spray the pigments and paper w/ a mixture of Dr. Bronner’s mint soap. Then I use a monoprint-inspired technique by laying another damp sheet on top and rolling a wooden dowel back and forth over the stack. I add and remove strips of painters tape throughout the process as well as a bit of acrylic paint here and there. I also favored a variety of metal scraping tools over brushes to add texture.

I made the works in this post  as a result of time spent at The Drawing Studio and in the encaustic studio at Conrad Wilde Gallery between August 2009 and November 2010.  They show how the same subjects, materials, and methods operate in multiple media. The figures in My Pager’s in My Other Pants, which I began working with in 1998, recur in the intaglio prints, encaustic, watercolor, and fiber art. I was introduced to fiber art in August 2009. The sculptural effect of patterns in fabric inform my use of recyclable produce netting, as a relief object, in Shipwrecked Crystals, Monolithand No On SB1070.  In Dancing Bear and View from the Sea w/ Copper Wire, I treat brushstrokes of wax as I would watercolor, where the initial capillary action between water, pigment, and paper makes each move  permanent. The mark-making tools and techniques I use to create etchings have led me to “draw by incision,” as  in No On Prop 8.  InCrime Drama and Love Crimes, incision is depicted literally and stitching is metaphoric.
